Since 1959–the fiftieth anniversary celebration was late last year–the Jelly Roll Jazz Band has been a fixture on anybody's list of top bands. Founded by Ted Shafer, it has a repertoire that others find hard to match. There are obscurities associated with Ma Rainey, Tiny Parham, Johnny Dodds, King Oliver, Jelly Roll Morton and the Dixie Jug Blowers; compositions by Lu Watters and Turk Murphy; as well as originals by young revivalists such as Sonnanstine, Giomi, Robin Wetterau and Sanford Newbauer.
