PERSONNEL BIOGRAPHIES:
Art Wood He plays trumpet & trombone, is an Oakland native & S.F. State graduate. Art has been a backup musician for groups ranging from the Temptations to the Mills Brothers. He has played European music with the Steve Balich Band for 20 years. Art's wife, Jo Anne, is very understanding: he has been on the bandstand playing New Year's Eve jobs for 29 out of their 30 years of marriage.
Mark Jurich
Our piano player was born in Oakland. He studied piano with the late Don Burke while in high school, music at Chabot College with Frank Sumares and Gail Kilbourne and Cal State Hayward with Chuck Israels and Dave Eshelman. Mark retired in 1998 from probation work. Dixieland is a relatively recent interest. Mark currently plays in several bands including Chuck Dillenbeck's East Bay Stompers in Fremont and Oakland's Class Act Big Band. Mark now resides in Hayward.
Scott Wild
Has been playing the drums since the age of 7. Originally from NJ, he studied classical and jazz before moving to California in the mid eighties. Co-founder of Marblehead Records a small independent record label, Scott has co-produced other artists as well as his own group, "Ton of Bricks". When not playing the drums, Scott works as an independent Sales Consultant.
Rich Newcomb
Has been playing traditional jazz since 1987. Besides holding down the trombone chair with the Barrelhouse Jazz Band and the East Bay Stompers, he also substitutes on trombone, tuba and trumpet with several other area jazz ensembles. Rich daylights as a technical writer when not playing traditional jazz and in his spare time he enjoys reading and writing about history with an emphasis on pre-modern Japan.
David Auerbach
Plays the tuba in a type of band where he can fit his big horn: brass quintet, big band, polka, klezmer and experimental rock. As Johny Blood, he played with the indie rock band The Magnetic Fields and his own electric tuba duo, Blood & Stone. He current plays with Bay Area world music group the Mad Maggies and records with his group The Brothers Twain.
Bruce Stangeland
A farm boy from Illinois, plays tenor banjo. He is a retired chemical engineer who started playing traditional jazz in 1992. He currently plays with the Barrelhouse Jazz Band, the Joyful Noise Jazz Band, the Sir Francis Drake Irregulars, the Dana Street Jazz Trio, and the Old Folkies/New Life Band. Venues have included art receptions, birthdays, engagement parties, weddings, memorial services, church services, retirement homes, restaurants, jazz clubs, a hurricane Katrina relief benefit, and cancer walk-a-thons. He also played in several now-inactive bands - the Jubilee Jazz Band, the Gateswingers and the Riverboat Gamblers. He currently serves the New Orleans Jazz Club of Northern California as treasurer and webmaster. More details are on his website, www.bestangeland.com.
Al Flood
Has been with the band since its inception. He plays clarinet and sax Al started playing in grammar school, and hasn't stopped yet. Al also plays reeds for another jazz band named ""And That's Jazz"". When not playing music, or traveling, he is a Consultant Pharmacist for hospitals and pharmacies.
