Traditional Jazz in the San Francisco  Bay Area

We regret to inform you that our trombone player, Chuck McLain has passed away. Chuck was one of the original members of the band. His memorial service will be held at Montclair Presbyterian Church in Oakland on December 4 at 2PM.

------ The Barrelhouse Jazz Band has been playing traditional (Dixieland) jazz in the bay area since 1972.      Like the earliest tradition of jazz, the Barrelhouse Jazz Band, came out of the Church.

The band loves to see people dance to their music.  It is a "turn on" which brings out their very best.  The band often plays for church services in a number of denominations in the greater bay area.  It is always a joyful experience for the congregation.  One member said', "I didn't think church was supposed to be fun and exciting ... I've. never had better time--in church, in my whole life."

For listening or dancing, the band provides a great variety of styles.  In addition to swing and fox-trot dances,  the band also plays struts, stomps, blues, and rags.

The band members are Al Flood (clarinet/sax), Chuck McLain (trombone/vocals),   Mark Jurich (piano), Jim Lockie-Brown (banjo), Viki Jacobson (bass sax), Rob Wilkins, Art Wood (trumpet/trombone), and Joel Jacobson (trumpet).

The band plays for wedding receptions and anniversaries, birthday parties, jazz clubs and anyone else who enjoys traditional jazz.  The band has a tradition of playing the Piedmont Fourth of July Parade.  It has also performed at  The Alameda Street Fair, the New Orleans Jazz Club of Northern California, the Napa Jazz Club and a number of special annual events.  The band has also played at the Concord Jazz Festival and NewYears Eve at Ghiarardelli Square.

HISTORY

Thirty years ago a small group of musicians at the Montclair Presbyterian Church in Oakland, CA. decided to form a 'Traditional Jazz Band'.  The bands focus is on the West Coast New Orleans style developed by Lu Watters with the two trumpet sound.  Black spirituals, played in the traditional jazz style, were the initial focus of the band.  After several years the full range of traditional jazz music from the 1920s and 1930s was explored and many tunes were added to the repertoire.

Today the bands repertoire extends from pre-1900 spirituals to current pieces such as the Cantina from Star Wars.  In addition the band has many swing numbers to provide a well rounded evening of entertainment.
